"I would say if anyone was looking to go on the program, it would be the perfect opportunity to take advantage of. The support provided will enable you to reintegrate back into society without it being too intense."

John’s journey began in June 2024 at HMP Thorn Cross, where he joined the Rebuild with Hope Foundation after completing a previous prison work program. Drawn by the opportunity for training, education, and a structured path forward, he saw this initiative as a critical step toward rebuilding his life and securing a better future.

His incarceration stemmed from poor decisions and naivety, leading to a challenging first year in prison that took a toll on both his mental and physical well-being. Isolated and struggling with motivation, he faced weight gain and health issues that further impacted his confidence. Over time, he came to terms with his situation and shifted his focus toward personal growth. He found purpose by supporting fellow inmates as a Shannon Trust mentor and a Samaritans listener, helping others improve their reading and writing skills while also gaining a sense of fulfillment. Despite facing bullying, he learned to stand up for himself and accept the reality of his circumstances.

The 12-week Rebuild with Hope program exceeded his expectations, providing not just job training but also essential life skills that empowered him beyond employment prospects. One unexpected yet significant benefit was the £6 daily meal allowance, which initially seemed small but became a tool for self-improvement. By learning to budget wisely, John used the allowance to ensure he had nutritious meals for both lunch and dinner, fostering a sense of control over his health. This small shift led to increased energy, a more positive mindset, and noticeable weight loss, reinforcing the idea that transformation starts with everyday habits.

With the program’s unwavering support, John gradually overcame his fears about reintegration, particularly concerning employment and housing. He secured a three-month paid contract through the foundation, later extended for an additional term, providing crucial financial stability leading up to his release. Now working at the community hub, he contributes to special projects such as the school uniform initiative, finding fulfillment in giving back to the community.

Reflecting on his journey, John encourages others in similar situations to seize the opportunity and embrace the support offered by the program. He credits Rebuild with Hope for not only easing his transition back into society but also for equipping him with the mindset, skills, and confidence to rebuild his life with purpose.
